Marking Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day, Desa Bumi, the strategic CSR and philanthropy program of the Daya Bumi Group under the Mochammad Thohir Foundation, announced new initiatives to strengthen rural access to renewable energy and digital connectivity.

As part of its “Energy for the Young Generation” program, Desa Bumi donated Schneider Electric inverters to 20 Society of Renewable Energy (SRE) student chapters across Indonesian campuses. The equipment will be used to support renewable energy labs, research-practice projects, and clean energy entrepreneurship.

At the same time, Desa Bumi launched “Daya Bumi Telecommunications”, an affordable rural internet service designed to be managed in collaboration with local communities.

“For us, the meaning of independence is when every child of the nation, regardless of where they come from, has equal access to energy and information,” said Gamma Thohir, Co-Founder of Daya Bumi Group and Founder of Desa Bumi.

Through the donation program "Energy for the Young Generation" and the "Daya Bumi Telecommunications" service, we want to support the government’s program to eliminate the gap between rural and urban areas, while opening new opportunities to help advance society.

The “Energy for the Young Generation” donation from Desa Bumi consists of Schneider Electric equipment targeted at renewable energy laboratories and SRE student chapters to strengthen research-practice activities, learning demonstrations, and clean energy entrepreneurship projects both on campus and in community implementation.

Donation recipients include 20 campuses across Indonesia: SRE Universitas Jenderal Soedirman, SRE Universitas Sumatera Utara, SRE Universitas Telkom Purwokerto, SRE Universitas Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa, SRE Universitas Tidar, SRE Institut Teknologi Bandung, SRE Institut Teknologi Kalimantan, SRE Universitas Gadjah Mada, SRE Student Chapter Politeknik Energi dan Mineral Akamigas, SRE Student Chapter Politeknik Negeri Medan, SRE Universitas Airlangga, SRE Universitas Udayana, SRE Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB University), SRE Universitas Hasanuddin, SRE Universitas Telkom, SRE Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember, SRE Universitas Negeri Jakarta, SRE Universitas Lampung, SRE Politeknik Elektronika Negeri Surabaya, and SRE Institut Teknologi PLN.

Building the Future

Co-Founder of Daya Bumi Group & Founder of SRE Indonesia, Zagy Berian, explained, “Building villages means building the future of Indonesia. We start with energy and connectivity, because both are the foundations of a modern economy. With the support of technology, collaboration, and the voices of young people, villages in Indonesia are expected to become new centers of sustainable and equitable growth.”

Zagy Berian, who was recently appointed as a member of the UN Secretary-General’s Youth Advisory Group on Climate Change, becoming the first person from Indonesia and Southeast Asia to join this global advisory group, added that the social enterprise designed together with Gamma Thohir, namely “Daya Bumi Telecommunications,” adopts a Satellite to the Home (STTH) architecture, a Community as a Service model, and real-time beneficiary monitoring, ensuring the service is easy to use and jointly managed with local communities.

The first “Daya Bumi Telecommunications” site will be independently operated in the Sukobubuk Forest Farmers Group (KTH), Pati – Central Java, targeting 150 households. The scheme involves access down to the household level, a tripartite collaboration for maintenance and data subscriptions, and community-managed infrastructure leasing and service fees.

“Going forward, we believe that the telecommunications industry is the key to Indonesia’s leap of innovation in becoming a developed nation and realizing Golden Indonesia. With connectivity established in villages, there will be opportunities to increase village income sources and expand market integration,” said Gamma.

The model in Pati Village is integrated with local energy solutions such as a 10 kWp Solar Power Plant (PLTS) and a 20 kWh battery, allowing connectivity to synergize with productive needs such as cold storage, fish ponds, and irrigation, all monitored through a digital dashboard. This program is expected to be replicated in various regions and align with national programs for energy and food self-sufficiency, both of which require connectivity enabled by telecommunications technology.

About Desa Bumi

Desa Bumi is the strategic CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) and philanthropy program of Daya Bumi Group under the Mochammad Thohir Foundation, initiated in 2015 to support sustainable development through energy transition, equitable access to energy, and connectivity.

The expansion of Desa Bumi’s connectivity is strengthened through the green digital investment agenda, previously reinforced by an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with Resources Investment Limited (UAE) on July 24, 2025, at the Green Impact Festival in Jakarta. The MoU aims to develop renewable energy projects (starting with a 50 MW solar power plant with a roadmap to 100 MW+) as well as investment in digital infrastructure, including rural internet access.
