Good Policies and Good Luck as Capital for Developing Countries to Face Uncertainty

  • The International Monetary Fund or IMF, through its October 2025 World Economic Outlook (WEO), projects a slowdown in economic growth across various regions. However, developing countries (emerging markets) in Asia are showing better resilience due to external factors (good luck) and internal policies (good policies). The economic slowdown is triggered by increasing global and regional geopolitical uncertainties. This can be seen through several index measurements such as the Global Uncertainty Index, Economic Policy Uncertainty (EPU), and Geopolitical Risk Index (GPR), which illustrate the increasing uncertainty.
  • The development of Real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the WEO report shows that the Asian region as a whole is projected to slow down from 4.6% (2024) to 4.5% (2025) and 4.1% (2026). The Emerging and Developing Asia region still leads global growth, although it is experiencing a slowdown from 5.3% (2024) to 5.2% (2025) and 4.7% (2026). This figure exceeds the projections for developed countries (Advanced Asia) which are only around 1.1% in 2026.
