One Billion Domestic Tourist Trips by the End of the Year

The government issued policies and provided incentives for the public to boost the economy at the end of the year. This helped to achieve 1 billion domestic tourist trips again this year.

One Billion Domestic Tourist Trips by the End of the Year

The government is relying on consumption and public movement ahead of the new year to boost economic growth in the last quarter of 2025. The number of people traveling for domestic tourism purposes (domestic tourists) by the end of this year will again exceed 1 billion.

The number of domestic tourists reached its lowest point during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. Mobility restrictions to curb the spread of the coronavirus caused the number of domestic tourists to drop by 27% to around 525 million trips.

However, the number of domestic tourists has slowly increased since 2021, with an average growth rate of 18%. Domestic tourist traffic is usually high during public holidays, school holidays, and year-end holidays. The highest growth in domestic tourists occurred in 2024, which was a 22% increase compared to the previous year.

In April 2024, the number of domestic tourists reached its highest level since the pandemic began, reaching 104.5 million trips. This was triggered by people traveling home to celebrate Eid al-Fitr. This number cannot be matched by the number of domestic tourists during the June-July school holidays, which is still below 90 million trips per month.

During the 2024 year-end holidays, the number of domestic tourist trips recorded was 101 million. The total number of domestic tourist trips throughout 2024 reached 1 billion, or 1,021,084,031 trips to be exact.

Domestic tourism travel is still concentrated on the island of Java. Domestic tourism travel in the six provinces of Java accounts for nearly 70% of total travel. The three main provinces that are tourist destinations are East Java with 218.7 million trips (21.4%), West Java with 167.4 million trips (16.4%), and Central Java with 146.8 million trips (14.4%).

Provinces outside Java with relatively high tourist traffic are North Sumatra with 42.8 million trips (4.2%), South Sulawesi with 36.5 million trips (3.6%), and Bali with 22.6 million trips (2.2%).

For 2025, the number of domestic tourists up to October has reached 997.9 million trips. It is certain that in November the number of domestic tourists will exceed 1 billion, assuming an average increase of 99.7 million trips per month. By December, 1.2 billion trips by domestic tourists are projected.

The months in 2025 with the highest tourist traffic are April, during the Eid al-Fitr holiday, with 128 million trips. During the June-July school holidays, tourist traffic is also quite high, with 105.1 million trips and 100.2 million trips, respectively. Domestic travel at the end of the year (December) is also expected to exceed 100 million due to government policies.

To increase the number of domestic tourist movements, the government is providing incentives in the form of discounts on travel tickets, particularly domestic airline tickets, of 10%. In total, the value of the incentives provided is around Rp 16 trillion.

In addition, the government also encourages civil servants and private sector employees to work fromanywhere from December 29 to 31. This is to achieve the goal of increasing consumption from travel and accommodation bookings while remaining productive.
