The Ministry of Trade (MOT) issued Regulation of the Minister of Trade (Permendag) No. 15 of 2025 on Standardization in the Trade Sector. This is to encourage businesses to prioritize consumer protection.
Minister of Trade Budi Santoso said consumers are kings and their rights must be protected. The purpose of consumer protection is to create a fair system and legal certainty, ensuring a balance and legal certainty between the rights and obligations of consumers and business actors.
Improve the quality of products and services and ensure the quality of goods and services produced to meet consumer safety, health and comfort standards.
"Giving consumers the right to obtain correct, clear and honest information about products, as well as the right to compensation if they suffer losses is the ecosystem of consumer protection," he said when opening the '2025 Consumer Protection Awards' event, at the Ministry of Trade Building, Jakarta (27/11).
The Ministry of Trade has issued Minister of Trade Regulation (MOT) No. 15/2025 on Standardization in the Trade Sector. This regulation aims to improve consumer protection against the use of goods and services related to safety, security, health, and the environment (K3L). The regulation, which took effect on June 17, 2025, also aims to improve the competitiveness of the quality of products and labor in the trade sector.
Budi explained that the other objectives of this regulation are to improve product quality assurance that is competitive in domestic and international markets, realize healthy business competition and business certainty, encourage innovation and technology in trade and improve competence and labor productivity.
He added that all Indonesians are consumers who have rights and obligations protected by Law No. 8/1999 on Consumer Protection.
He emphasized that strengthening consumer protection is becoming increasingly crucial due to the large potential of the Indonesian market with a population of around 287.4 million.
"The Ministry of Trade together with local governments and stakeholders continue to educate consumers to increase community empowerment. This effort is expected to have a positive impact on improving welfare and economic growth," Budi said.
SNI as a market security instrument
Data from the Directorate General of Consumer Protection and Trade Order (PKTN) of the Ministry of Trade noted that since the beginning of 2025 until September, the number of consumer complaints is still quite high. There were 5,771 consumer complaints.
Of the complaints, around 1,200 of the reports are directly related to online trade, therefore SNI must be enforced as an instrument of market security.
Director General of Consumer Protection and Trade Order (PKTN) of the Ministry of Trade Moga Simatupang said the purpose of SNI is to protect consumers by ensuring product quality and safety, increasing the competitiveness of the national industry in domestic and international markets, and maintaining a healthy market order by preventing the circulation of dangerous products.
This standard also plays an important role in realizing sustainable development through the standardization of environmentally friendly and safe products.
Consumer protection award
Moga said the Ministry of Trade gives appreciation to local governments that have successfully organized consumer protection seen from various aspects ranging from supervision and standardization.

The four awards won by the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government this time cover aspects that are very fundamental in daily trade transactions. The details are the Regional Orderly Measurement Award which was achieved four years in a row, the Orderly Measurement Market Award, the SNI People's Market Award, and the UPTP Best Customer Award.
Ensure product safety
Executive Director of the Indonesian Textile Association (API) Danang Girindrawardana said the role of business actors to maintain consumer protection is to ensure product safety.
In addition, provide clear information, Make sure consumers have clear information about the products and/or services offered, including the benefits, safety, and risks that may arise.
"Products must be safe and have a minimum level of risk. Consider all product characteristics and their impact on consumers, especially for vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly," he told SUAR in Jakarta (27/11/2025).
