Bank Indonesia’s (BI) 2025 Retail Sales Survey shows the sector has remained resilient through mid-year despite uneven consumer sentiment.
The Real Sales Index (IPR) moved within a relatively stable range, dipping to 211.5 in January before climbing to a peak of 248.3 in April, lifted by Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr spending, and a string of long weekends.
By category, food, beverages, and tobacco consistently led retail activity, reaching 350.6 in March. Motor vehicle fuel sales also strengthened and are projected to hit a 2025 high in July at 114.2, supported by post-midyear mobility.
The ebb and flow across categories point to shifting consumption patterns. Gains in essentials such as food and fuel signal momentum driven by primary needs and mobility, while softer electronics sales suggest consumers are more selective on secondary or non-essential goods.
Looking ahead, the survey projects retail sales easing through September 2025, before rebounding in the final quarter on the back of Christmas and New Year holidays. Calendar effects from national and religious holidays remain a key support for retail performance amid current economic conditions.
