Until the middle of this year, the results of the 2025 Retail Sales Survey reported by Bank Indonesia (BI) indicated that retail sales performance was maintained.
From BI's report on the Retail Sales Survey, the Real Sales Index (RSI) showed a manageable trend, despite minor fluctuations at the beginning of the year and an increase in March and April. The highest total index occurred in April with a value of 248.3; while the lowest was in January with 211.5.
A significant increase occurred in March, which saw an uptick in economic activity. This was triggered by annual rituals. Namely, shopping entering the month of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr, to a series of long holidays at the weekend.
Sales of several categories of goods showed strong performance. The food, beverage, and tobacco group consistently had the highest index number among all categories, peaking in March with 350.6.
The motor vehicle fuel category is also showing a positive trend and is expected to reach its highest value in July, at 114.2. This is driven by the high mobility of the community after the mid-year holidays.
The upward and downward trends in each category indicate changes in people's consumption patterns. The increase in certain categories, such as food and fuel, indicates an economic movement driven by primary needs and mobility. Meanwhile, the decline in other categories, such as electronic equipment, indicates that consumers are more selective in spending their money on secondary or non-essential goods.
The survey results also predict that retail sales until September 2025 will still fall. Meanwhile, sales in the following three months until December 2025 are expected to increase due to the Christmas and New Year holidays. Stimulus moments such as a series of national and religious holidays also affect the performance of retail sales amid the current economic conditions.
