The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has again updated data on the impact of hydrometeorological disasters that have hit Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra. As of Friday (9/1/2025), the death toll has reached 1,182 people, after additional casualties in the last two days.
Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center Abdul Muhari explained that the additional victims were one person from North Aceh, two people from Langkat Regency, and one person from Central Tapanuli.
"This brings the total number of fatalities to 1,182," said Aam, as he is commonly known, at a press conference held on Friday (January 9, 2026).
In addition to the fatalities, BNPB also adjusted the number of missing persons to 145. Meanwhile, the number of affected residents who are still displaced is recorded at 238,627.
Abdul Muhari expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and emphasized that the data collection and search process was still being carried out intensively, especially in areas that were still under emergency response status.
In Aceh Province, out of a total of 18 affected districts/cities, 14 areas have moved to the emergency transition phase. However, four districts are still extending their emergency response status, namely Central Aceh, Gayo Lues, Aceh Tamiang, and Pidie Jaya. The Governor of Aceh has extended the emergency response status for 14 days, from January 8 to 22, to ensure that the search for victims and restoration of access proceed optimally.
"These areas remain the main focus, especially the restoration of road access and logistics distribution to communities located far from district and city command posts," said Abdul.
Meanwhile, North Sumatra and West Sumatra have fully entered the emergency transition phase. Although the search for victims has been suspended, SAR teams remain on standby.
"If there is new information from the public, the team is ready to conduct a search," he said.
In terms of infrastructure, BNPB and the Ministry of Public Works deployed 1,780 units of heavy equipment in the three affected provinces. The Takengon–Gayo Lues road, which had been cut off at four landslide points, is now partially passable by four-wheeled vehicles.
Permanent repairs are targeted for completion in stages by the end of January, including the installation of 270 Bailey bridges connecting national roads to villages. A number of bridges in Bener Meriah and Gayo Lues have even begun trial operations.
Logistics distribution also continues despite some areas entering a transition period. BNPB recorded logistics distribution reaching 19 tons in Aceh, 31.3 tons in North Sumatra, and 3.4 tons in West Sumatra. Distribution is carried out by land and air to reach remote areas.
During the emergency transition phase, BNPB began shifting its focus to short-term recovery, including the construction of temporary shelters. Currently, around 2,500 temporary shelters are being built.
In addition, BNPB has prepared a Housing Waiting Fund (DTH) with 15,000 accounts, of which 6,190 accounts are ready and 1,114 heads of families have received assistance of Rp600,000 per month.
"Not all victims have complete documents. We use biometric validation linked to Dukcapil data to ensure that aid reaches the right targets," explained Aam.
To mitigate subsequent disasters, BNPB coordinated with BMKG through intensive weather modification operations using three aircraft per province for 24 hours.
"This effort is to reduce the risk of extreme rainfall so that it does not trigger further disasters," he said.
Food and Energy Security
On the food front, Perum BULOG Director General Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Ahmad Rizal Ramdhani ensured that food supplies would remain secure in the affected areas until Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr.
He emphasized that food aid distribution was carried out based on three priority levels, namely isolated areas, severely affected areas, and areas with limited access.
"If an area needs 1,000 to 5,000 tons, we will prepare up to three times that amount to be on the safe side," said Ahmad Rizal.
In Aceh, BULOG has 15 warehouses with government rice reserves reaching 64,889 tons and 307,220 liters of cooking oil on standby. BULOG has also prepared an additional supply of up to 50,000 tons so that the total stock exceeds 100,000 tons.
The distribution of rice for natural disasters in Aceh has reached 12,561 tons, plus 5,000 tons at the request of the Governor of Aceh, as well as 8,922 tons of rice and 1,784 liters of cooking oil.
Meanwhile, in North Sumatra, food reserves reached 17,904 tons, with 5,098 tons of rice distributed for natural disaster relief. In West Sumatra, rice reserves as of January 8 were recorded at 5,508 tons, with an additional 30,000 tons en route from Tanjung Priok to Padang.
Nationally, BULOG's rice stockpile reached 3,351,900 tons and is confirmed to be sufficient until Eid al-Fitr. In 2026, BULOG is targeted to absorb 4 million tons of rice from domestic harvests.
"Our priority remains domestic demand. If stocks are sufficient, exports will be carried out in accordance with the President's directives," said Ahmad Rizal.

In the energy sector, PT Pertamina Corporate Secretary Arya Dwi Paramitha ensures that energy supplies remain secure.
"Pertamina always activates the Christmas and New Year Task Force, and yesterday it was also in conjunction with the Disaster Management Task Force. We will continue this pattern for Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr," he said.
In Aceh, out of 156 gas stations, 151 or around 97 percent have resumed operations. Pertamina is also conducting LPG market operations in nine districts/cities in Aceh and one region in West Sumatra with a total of around 100,000 cylinders.
"The goal is to normalize the market so that people can obtain LPG according to their household needs," said Arya.
In addition, Pertamina established six humanitarian posts and supported 164 posts and 111 public kitchens with supplies of LPG, fuel, generators, and solar power. The total energy assistance distributed reached 18,938 kilograms of LPG and around 654 thousand liters of fuel.
ESDM Assesses Electricity Tariff Discounts in Disaster Areas
The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) is currently reviewing the provision of electricity tariff discounts for areas affected by flash floods and landslides, such as West Sumatra, North Sumatra, and Aceh.
Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia said that this policy responds to a letter of request from regional heads in the affected areas. "In principle, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources will provide a discount, but we are currently reviewing how many months and how much it will cost," said Bahlil at a press conference on the 2025 Performance Achievements of the Energy and Mineral Resources Sector in Jakarta on Thursday.
Bahlil added that before the policy is implemented, his office will report this plan to President Prabowo Subianto.
In addition, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources continues to improve electrical infrastructure. There are around 150 villages that still need repairs, while 1,000 generators have been sent to 224 affected villages in Aceh. These generators have a capacity of 5,000 to 7,000 VA, as an emergency measure because some low-voltage infrastructure has not yet been completed.
Bahlil emphasized that the repairs also include fuel and LPG services in the affected areas.
"There are still several districts that require significant effort to restore energy services for the community," he said.
