From Soccer, Benny Soetrisno Learns to Forge Mental Health
- In the midst of his busy schedule to keep exports growing, Chairman of the Association of Indonesian Export Companies, Benny Soetrisno, has his own way of maintaining health and work productivity in balance. That is, diligently playing soccer.
- The 75-year-old feels the benefits of soccer because this team sport teaches the importance of cooperation, communication and achieving goals. And, last but not least, it builds character. For this electrical engineer who graduated from RWTH, Aachen, Germany, besides training physical health, playing soccer can also maintain mental health and make better business decisions. It's no wonder that the chairman of a series of companies remains active in his favorite sport - although not as often as he used to when he was younger.

The Older the More Valuable
- In Eastern tradition, elders are a source of wisdom. Empowering them is not just a human resource strategy, but a form of organizational courtesy and blessing. However, this custom is not practiced in all Eastern countries. In Japan, for example, the societal norm is that senior citizens should be respected. However, in the workplace, senior employees are sometimes marginalized in a way that can also be considered brutal.
- This is not a conscious decision. In Japan, companies are constrained by social values and laws that make firing employees extremely difficult. Historically, this has led to the phenomenon of madogiwazoku - which can be loosely translated to English as a tribe or group that sits by the window.
Usually, because their services are no longer needed, while the company cannot or does not want to fire them, employees on the verge of retirement will be given a comfortable place near the window to spend their working hours. Perhaps one of them is to read the newspaper until the end of working hours.
