Quality of Human Resources Determines the Progress of the Business World

Since a decade ago, based on the Human Development Index score, Indonesia has been among the countries with high quality human resources. But, in ASEAN, it ranks 6th.

Quality of Human Resources Determines the Progress of the Business World

The progress of a nation is not only measured by the level of economic growth achieved, but also determined by the quality of human resources. Based on UNDP's Human Development Index score, since a decade ago Indonesia has managed to enter the group of countries with high quality human resources.

When delivering a speech at the SUAR new media launch event on Thursday night (21/8/2025), Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto said that many countries can prosper not because of natural resources, but because of human resources (HR).

"Indonesia will have everything if human resources are boosted. This is the homework to achieve 8% growth," he said.

The Human Development Report 2025 broadcast by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) states: Indonesia's Human Development Index (HDI) in 2023 is ranked 113 out of 193 countries with a score of 0.728 (scale of 0 to 1). This position rose one rank compared to the previous year.

With this score, Indonesia is included in the group of countries with high quality human resources. Countries that have an HDI score above 0.800 will be classified as countries with very high human resources.

HDI is formed by 3 dimensions of human development. Namely, the dimension of longevity and healthy living, the dimension of knowledge, and the dimension of decent living standards.

Indonesia's HDI ranks 6th in ASEAN

At the global level, although Indonesia's HDI trend continues to rise, its position and score are below the world average of 0.756. Among ASEAN countries, Indonesia's HDI is ranked 6th, after Singapore (0.946), Brunei Darussalam (0.837), Malaysia (0.819), Thailand (0.798), and Vietnam (0.766).

With this position, what Airlangga said is relevant and important to be a common concern. The quality of Indonesia's human resources must be boosted so that they are not less competitive with neighboring countries in the region, even the world. The quality of human resources will determine the success of the business world, which in turn also affects the economic growth and prosperity of the country.
