Dilemma in Coconut Trade amidst Price Spike
- Indonesia, as the world's largest coconut producer, has huge trade potential. However, since last August, this commodity has experienced supply shortages and price spikes. Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the value and volume of whole coconut exports jumped significantly, especially in 2024. The export volume of whole coconuts was at its lowest point in the 2021-2023 period, which was less than 400,000 tons. A sharp spike occurred in 2024, reaching 624,387 tons with an export value of US$ 181.59 million.
- Along with this sharp rise in exports came a price and supply crisis in the domestic market. Round coconuts became scarce and their prices skyrocketed, far above the normal price. The price of shredded coconut in the market had reached Rp 20,000-Rp 25,000 per grain. To cushion the blow, the government plans to take decisive action by halting the export of whole coconuts.
