Freeport: 7 Workers Trapped in Mudflow Incident in Underground Mine

PRESS RELEASE

On Monday, September 8, at approximately 22:00 WIT in Papua, Indonesia, a large flow of wet material occurred from a production takeaway point in one of the five production blocks at the Grasberg Block Cave underground mine. The incident closed access to certain areas of the mine, restricting evacuation routes for seven workers.

The location of the trapped workers is known and they are believed to be safe. Crews are working to clear access for safe and quick evacuation. Concurrently, provisioning activities for the workers are underway.

At the Grasberg Block Cave mine, ore is mined using remotely operated equipment; however, the material flow from this incident blocked an access route where affected workers were working on mine development activities. All other workers are confirmed to be safe.

Mining operations have been temporarily halted to prioritize clearing access routes and safe evacuation of the seven contractor workers.
