Floods Expected Not to Reduce Tourists' Interest in Coming to Bali

Rain poured down on almost all parts of Bali from Tuesday night to Wednesday afternoon (10/9/2025). As a result, floods and landslides hit the Island of the Gods.

At least nine people died, two people were missing, and 202 families or 620 people were affected by flooding in 43 points in Bali. These include Jembrana, Denpasar, Gianyar, Klungkung, Badung, and Tabanan regencies.

Garbage-filled waterways caused the river to overflow and collapse several shops in the Kumbasari Market and Jalan Pura Demak area. The disaster caused severe traffic congestion in the vicinity.

In a post on social media, a building located right on the banks of the Badung River in Denpasar collapsed after being eroded by heavy floodwaters Wednesday morning.

Secretary of the Bali Provincial Transportation Office, Standly Suwandi, said that until Wednesday night the Dewa Ruci underpass was still flooded. It was seen that several cars were still trapped in the puddle.

"Since noon the rain has stopped. Tomorrow we focus on cleaning up on the road, especially collapsed and washed away buildings," Standly told SUAR.

Traffic conditions around Bali Mandara, or around the airport, have normalized and are less congested. "It is expected to be back to normal tomorrow," Standly said.

Bali is known as one of the number one tourist destinations in Asia. Many foreign tourists make Bali their main destination when traveling.

Head of the Bali Provincial Tourism Office, I Wayan Sumarajaya, hopes that this flood disaster will not have an impact on foreign tourist visits to Bali.

"Hopefully, with coordination from various parties, it can be handled quickly and does not affect our tourism industry," said Wayan.

He added that a number of areas were also affected, such as in Kuta, an area visited by many foreign tourists. Some tourists were evacuated using rubber boats, or on foot by carrying their pants. The water was as high as an adult's calf.

Meanwhile, Wayan reported that many tourists arrived at the arrival terminal at Ngurah Rai Airport. There were also no queues at the departure gates, indicating that conditions were still running normally.

Anticipating the impact of disasters due to extreme weather, Bali Governor Wayan Koster said his party will continue to coordinate with related parties.

"So far, vital and strategic objects, such as airports, have not experienced any disruption. We continue to coordinate with BMKG for weather information. We hope the rain will start to subside," Wayan said in a press statement received by the SUAR team.

Focus on evacuating victims

In addition to the collapse of several buildings due to river flow, water also entered the store, causing damage to merchandise dominated by textiles.

Due to the rising water volume of Tukad Badung, the flood also swept away the basement and courtyard of Kumbasari Market, washing away the merchants' goods.

"The first step is to evacuate the victims and clean up the garbage caused by the flood as quickly as possible. Thus, the area which is one of the largest economic centers in Denpasar City can recover soon," said Wayan.

The next step, Koster asked the Mayor of Denpasar to record all material losses of flood victims. "Be it buildings that must be renovated, damaged and washed away merchandise. It must be recorded and calculated so that it is easy to provide assistance," he said.

Koster admitted that he had asked BPBD to synergize with related parties and the community to look for victims who were swept away by the flood. "For those who died, we have also prepared compensation of Rp 15 million," he said.

Disaster emergency

Head of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) Suharyanto said that his party will prioritize search and rescue efforts and rescue of affected communities. In addition, maximizing the fulfillment of the basic needs of the community.

In line with that, handling efforts continue to be carried out with a focus on searching, helping, and evacuating affected residents in accordance with the direction of the Head of BNPB.

"The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Bali Province together with district / city BPBDs conducted a review of disaster locations that were still flooded. Meanwhile, data on material losses is still being collected," said Suharyanto.
