Like the waves of the ocean, thousands of Online Ojek convoys escorted Affan Kurniawan to the motherland. Not only Ojol, all levels of society also feel deep sorrow and anger. The discussion of Affan's death in cyberspace even occupies the top position.
Affan, who was crossing the road after delivering a food order, lost his life when he was run over by a Police Mobile Brigade tactical vehicle during a rally in Pejompongan, Jakarta, Thursday (28/8/2025) night. The multi-ton armored vehicle, which is supposed to protect people from various attacks, crashed at high speed and ran over his body.

President Prabowo Subianto also expressed his special condolences and concern over this tragedy, Friday (29/08/2025).
"I am very concerned and deeply saddened by this incident. The government will guarantee the family's livelihood, and give special attention to the parents, younger siblings, and older siblings."
However, the rice had become porridge. Affan cannot be revived. Affan is one of the country's golden generation. On July 18, he celebrated his 21st birthday. When Indonesia celebrates 100 years of independence on August 17, 2045, Affan should be 41 years old and enjoying better welfare in the motherland. But now, that golden hope has been taken away.
Political instability worsens business climate
This tragedy also caused many activities to be disrupted and even stopped. Many canceled meetings, meetings, and even work at the office, opting instead to work from home. The streets, which are usually very crowded at the end of the week, became deserted. The price of a tragedy that must be paid is very expensive, even unpaid because it involves human life.

This incident has further enhanced the challenges faced by the business world. Previously challenged by fierce global competition and radical technological change, followed by geopolitical and geoeconomic changes, now there is increasing domestic political instability.
Koffi Anan, former UN Secretary General, emphasized: "Peace and stability are not only essential for human security, but also the foundation for economic development."
"Political stability is critical for economic growth and investment, as uncertainty increases risks for investors and raises the cost of capital." (World Bank)
Referring to the Political Stability Index of ASEAN Countries (2023), countries with high indices encourage better investment. Singapore and Brunai Darusalam occupy the top and second positions. Indonesia ranks 8th out of 10 countries. Malaysia, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand are at the top.
To overcome instability, this tragedy must be investigated thoroughly. Fair law enforcement will restore trust in the state apparatus and prevent anarchy. Whoever is involved and guilty at all levels must be punished accordingly.
Law enforcement that is sharp downward and blunt upward, or only sharp outward, but blunt inward, must end.
The accumulation of collective disappointment with the rulers, both in the executive, legislative and judiciary, also needs to be unraveled and resolved immediately. Many rulers are considered insensitive and even tend to be arrogant towards the people who are currently experiencing many difficulties in life,
Daron Acemoglu and James A Robinson in their book Why Nations Fail (2012) even emphasize that the absence of accountability mechanisms for state administrators or popular participation is one of the indicators that can cause a country to fail.
On the other hand, a successful country has inclusive institutions that provide ample opportunities for people to participate, innovate and benefit from economic growth.
It is time to "steamroll" all state officials who lack integrity. Replace them with those with integrity and sincerity to serve and protect the people, instead of arbitrarily abusing their power.
Affan's death should not be in vain. Indonesia must continue to progress and grow, and finally achieve a Golden Indonesia. Our prayers are with your sacrifice, Affan.
